The Asheville Fire Department will participate in its first Asheville Fire Truck Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 22, in the parking lot of the Family Justice Center, 35 Woodfin St.
This family event will include fire trucks from the Asheville Fire Department, along with at least a dozen other trucks from nearby fire departments. Not only can people come check out trucks, but there will be music, food to purchase, a fire safety inflatable house and an obstacle course for kids!
This event is organized by residents Tom and Joyce Tesser and was originally thought to encourage locals and visitors to enjoy a day meeting their local firefighters and checking out trucks. However, while planning this event, the Tessers became aware of the increase in firefighters developing cancer and wanted to use this event to make others aware as well. Their ultimate goal is to raise funds to help purchase equipment to help prevent cancer in our firefighters. Recent studies have shown that firefighters are much more likely to develop cancers of the respiratory, digestive, brain and urinary systems than the general public due to the increase in carcinogens produced from today’s materials when burning.
