As improvements continue along the Haywood Street corridor, residents can expect to see crews working in the area to remove trees and prepare for new ones. Tree removal is scheduled to begin March 16 and could take up to one week.
In total, 23 trees will be removed, leaving some of the larger, more mature trees in place. Later in the project, the contractor will plant 28 new trees. Replacement is necessary in order to complete the sidewalk improvements, which include expanded space for mobility and better tree wells. Further, many of the existing trees have outgrown their limited space with roots creating tripping hazards. The new tree pits will be wider, deeper and built to City of Asheville standards in order to support healthy tree growth in the decades ahead.
The City is currently completing a wider tree planting, including many in downtown tree pits.
