Background
The Asheville Municipal Golf Course, known to locals as Muni, is an 18-hole golf course designed by Donald Ross in the 1920’s. It is one of the oldest courses in Western North Carolina and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The proximity to the Swannanoa River places the front nine in the designated floodway. In May 2019, a flood event resulted in much of the front nine holes being submerged by as much as 5 feet of water near holes 4, 5, 6, 7, and the restroom building.
There is a complex stormwater system that runs throughout the property, most of which was installed decades prior to ownership by the City of Asheville and has met or exceeded its useful life. Increased rainfall volume and intensities coupled with deterioration of this stormwater infrastructure and proximity within the designated floodplain have created issues throughout the golf course. Standing water, saturated ground, pipe and structure failures, and sinkholes have created concerns for safety, had negative effects on playability, and impeded operations.
The goal of this project will be to evaluate the existing stormwater system in order to develop engineered stormwater solutions and associated cost estimates to improve conditions throughout the Asheville Municipal Golf Course.
Timeline

- Fall, 2020: Final report received.
