Drivers age 50 and older can sharpen their driving skills at the AARP Smart Driver course hosted by City of Asheville Parks and Recreation. The course will be held from 11:45 to 4 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Harvest House, 205 Kenilworth Road. The cost for the class is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.
The Smart Drivers course offers numerous tips for coping with changes in perception and reaction time, as well as increased hazards with faster cars, congested traffic and aggressive drivers. The class does not involve any behind-the-wheel time and there are no tests.
“This course is for anyone who wants to stay safe on the roads as long as possible and hopefully prevent being in a crash,” according to AARP literature. “And we are sharing the roads with new generations of drivers, some who unfortunately are texting or talking on a cell phone and not paying full attention. We’ll talk about how to cope with these challenges.”
Those completing the class will receive a certificate of attendance which can be used to apply for a discount on automobile insurance through many North Carolina insurance providers.
