July may be a popular month to get out of town for a summer vacation, but Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) has plenty to experience close to home for little to no cost.

Get Sporty
Join local picklers for Pickleball Summer Slam, a night of open play followed by a friendly single-elimination tournament on July 6 at 6 p.m. in Murphy-Oakley Park.- Learn an exciting leisure activity at Carrier Park during a lawn bowling clinic at 1 p.m. on July 15.
- Midnight Basketball returns to Carrier Park for teens and adults on July 15 at 8 p.m.
- On July 22, the Carrier Cup is three tournaments in one day. Assemble your team for cornhole at 10:15 a.m., kanjam at 11:30 a.m., and spikeball at 12:45 p.m.
- Registration opens July 3 for popular co-ed and men’s adult softball leagues with games starting August 14.
For Teens & Kids
- Discuss current topics, learn to tie a necktie, and focus on the basics of caring for yourself at the monthly Shiloh Young Men’s Group at Linwood Crump Shiloh Center on July 12 at 6 p.m. For more information, call (828) 274-7739.
- Tempie Avery Montford Center hosts a monthly electronic gaming night with snacks and drinks on July 21. Advance registration is required.
- A new program at Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Center to build wrestling skills starts July 17 with separate sessions for 6-12 year-olds and 13-16 year-olds. $10 registration includes three training sessions per week for four weeks.
- Pop-up events bring Imagination Monday and Splash into Summer to parks around the city throughout the month.
Make it Outdoors
- Strap on your quads or inlines for Community Skate Night at Carrier Park on July 7 at 6 p.m.
- Newbies and experienced players can play Cribbage in the Park at West Asheville Park on July 11 at 5 p.m.
- Experience Top Gun: Maverick under the night sky in Pack Square Park during the monthly Movies in the Park series on July 14 at 8 p.m.
- Adults over 50 are invited to Murphy-Oakley Park for Seniors in the Park on July 27 at 11 a.m. Each month, the Grove Street Center team brings music, games, and lunch to a different park. Call (828) 350-2062 to register.
