APR Innovators is an Asheville Parks & Recreation series highlighting team members going above and beyond to bring huge value to community members through knowledge, connections, and insight that come from a desire to create the best city possible through the power of high-quality recreation programs and safe parks that welcome everyone.
When did you join the Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) team?
I joined as a temporary/seasonal team member on March 18, 2019. When I started, I was on the cleaning crew that keeps community centers welcoming and healthy spaces. By the end of April that year, I started with the mowing crew.
As the Labor Crew Supervisor for the upkeep and cleaning crew since February 8, 2021, I process work orders and help organize the general tasks that keep the city’s parks and community centers safe, enjoyable, and accessible for the people who live here.
What inspired you to apply to join the team?
My dad, Hobert Surrett, retired from APR and came back as a temporary/seasonal worker. 
Which accomplishments are you most proud of in terms of your work with the department?
I would say coming out of my shell. In the position I hold, you can’t be shy, LOL!
I have earned certificates in Fundamentals of Supervision 1 and 2 from AB Tech, and am working on getting my associate degree in Business Management. Just being the best that I can be.
For you personally, what does it mean to work for the department?
It means that you can be or do anything that you put your mind to. I love being in parks, being around people, and getting to know people. I like to boost morale and help those who need help. I’m a listening supervisor who is there for the employees, the public, visitors, or people who live in the surrounding areas.
How have you grown professionally by working with APR?
I have definitely grown professionally through information that I have learned from holding temporary/seasonal positions, then full time, and being promoted to a supervisor position. I’ve learned so much and continue to learn new ways to manage.
How would you complete this sentence: “I work for Asheville Parks & Recreation because…”
Being outdoors and knowing what APR employees do to make these parks look their best and keep them clean. The smiles on the faces of so many. Asheville residents and visitors as they come up to us and say, “Thank you for all the hard work!”
The APR team works so hard and it takes a lot of effort and organization to keep the parks in top shape. I couldn’t ask for better people than the ones I work with and have gotten to know over the years. We all strive to do better, but we do better in working together.
I enjoy coming to work. I am blessed.
