After several months of diligent preparation and engagement with directly impacted businesses and residents, construction for the first phase of work for the Patton Ave Sidewalk Accessibility Improvements project will begin on Tuesday, March 12th. The work will entail the removal and replacement of existing sidewalks and trees to create an ADA-accessible sidewalk. This project is supported by the GAP Plan and supports Asheville City Councils’ priority of Improve and Expand Core Services.
The first phase of work will begin on the south side of the street between Asheland to Coxe Ave and will require a full travel lane and sidewalk closure at the location shown in the map above. A pedestrian access route will be maintained during this phase and throughout the project. Vehicular traffic will be able to turn right from Asheland onto Patton Ave and Patton Ave. onto Coxe Ave. during this phase. The business at 108 Patton will remain open/accessible during the project. This phase is anticipated to last four to five weeks, depending on the weather.
All phases of this project are anticipated to be completed in August 2024.
The City recognizes that construction activities can impact the flow and visibility of business. To help mitigate this impact and ensure continued patronage, crews will be installing banners in the construction zones. These banners will prominently display the message that businesses remain open during the construction period. Public Works staff is also working with businesses individually to coordinate the work and minimize negative impacts. We aim to maintain visibility and accessibility for all businesses in the area, fostering a supportive environment for the local economy to thrive.
