The City of Asheville believes part of being a good partner with our community members is keeping you informed on the many projects in and around the city, so we created “The Progress Report.”
It’s an opportunity to share updates on projects as they move toward completion.
These are just some of the highlights, but we welcome you to learn more about all our projects on the City of Asheville Projects page.
September 12
Water Meter Replacement Program
You may have seen contractors around town as rollout of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system continues in areas of the city. As of September 4, nearly 24,500 meters have been installed, or a 38.7% project completion rate. There’s still a way to go as the project facilitates meter replacement for all of the City of Asheville’s approximately 63,000 water department customers. The installation phase will be completed in 2025.
Patton Avenue Projects
We understand Patton Avenue is a main city thoroughfare impacting many people, commuters and businesses in our community. Since several improvement projects are underway, we thought we would share the updates one by one.
Patton Ave Sidewalk Accessibility Project
We filled you in on the last Progress Report about the latest construction, so we’re letting you know things remain on track with just about all the northside sidewalk and ramp works complete. All northside work should be complete, weather permitting, the week of September 16. After that crews will tackle the last ADA ramp to be addressed on the southside. Tree planting is planned for October 2024.
Carter Street – Ann Street – Patton Avenue Stormwater Improvement Project
Waterline relocation is now complete, allowing crews to continue installing the new stormwater system. Lane closures on Patton Avenue will continue to allow crews to safely proceed with the project on Patton’s northside and the Carter Street area. More information regarding lane closures and project updates can be found here. This phase of work is projected, as weather permits, to last three weeks.
College and Patton Improvements Project
This project will implement improvements on sections of College Street and Patton Avenue in the core of Downtown Asheville with the goal of improving safety, accessibility, and equity for all users of the streets and users of the wider City transportation network.
Staff is working to prepare and issue the solicitation to select a contractor to perform resurfacing, striping and ramp work. That bid is expected to the issued this fall. City Council will then be asked to consider approval of the contract prior to the work being performed. With all that in place, work is expected to kick off in 2025.
Downtown Patton Avenue Corridor Feasibility Study
We’re coming up on reporting back to the community what information this study has generated.
On September 25, the Multi-Modal Transportation Commission will receive a presentation.
The community is encouraged to come see the presentation:
