Transit Committee Meeting Updates

NOTICE: The regular meetings of the Transit Committee are suspended until June 30, 2027. Resolution 25-194, enacted by the City Council on August 26, 2025, established four Helene Recovery Boards and instituted a temporary operational framework for thirteen advisory boards and commissions, including the Multimodal Transportation Commission (MMTC), the governing body of the Transit Committee. Until June 30, 2027, transit-related tasks will be assigned to the Multimodal Transportation Commission and the Transportation Department.  

General Information

The purpose of the Committee is to study public transportation in the City and serve as an advisory body to the Multimodal Transportation Commission and the Transportation Department on matters affecting the transit system and its operation, including, but not limited to the following:

  • The current and future direction of the transit system;
  • Transit system quality, effectiveness, problems, needs, and requirements;
  • Transit-related matters of public interest and concern;
  • Proposed budget and plan of operations;
  • Rate system and bus routing;
  • Grants and other sources of funding;
  • Rules, regulations, and procedures;
  • Coordination of transit matters with other agencies as may be necessary or desirable; and 
  • Other transit matters as necessary for the effective operation of the transit system.

Membership

Membership of the Committee shall be governed by Ordinance No. 4190 and the Rules of Procedure of the Multimodal Transportation Commission.  Committee members shall be appointed by the Multimodal Transportation Commission.  Multimodal Transportation Commission members appointed by Council that represent transit interests shall be automatically appointed by the Commission to the Committee.

The Committee shall have no fewer than 7 and no more than 11 members. Provided however that this cap shall not apply when a member of the MMTC is automatically appointed to the committee by the Multimodal Transportation Commission and the Committee consists of 11 members at the time of the appointment.

Members of the Committee shall be appointed for three year terms or until the member’s successor is duly appointed and qualified. Any vacancies occurring shall be filled by the Multimodal Transportation Commission for the unexpired term. Members may serve up to two consecutive full terms.  Membership shall be staggered to the end that the terms of all members shall not expire at the same time. The terms of the members on the Committee who are also members of the Multimodal Transportation Commission representing transit interests will run concurrently with his/her term on the Multimodal Transportation Commission.

Public Comment:

The agenda commenting period will be closed at 5:00 p.m. the day before the meeting. All public comments will be sent to the committee prior to the meeting, but may not be read aloud. There are no live call-in comments for this meeting. Please submit public comments using the phone number or email address listed below.

  • Call-In Public Comments: Call (855)-925-2801 Enter Code: 9974. Comments will be limited to 3 minutes. Comments can be made in advance or during the meeting.
  • Written Public Comments: Pre-submitted written public comments may be emailed to K16665@publicinput.com (closes at 5:00 p.m. the day before the meeting).
  • In-Person Comments: Any person addressing the Committee shall be limited to a three-minute presentation. Any group of three (3) or more individuals, not including the speaker, making a presentation to the Committee may have a single spokesperson who will be allowed ten (10) minutes to address the Committee. The Committee will receive written information from any individuals or groups that cannot conclude their presentations within these time limitations.
