APR Innovators is an Asheville Parks & Recreation series highlighting team members going above and beyond to bring huge value to community members through knowledge, connections, and insight that come from a desire to create the best city possible through the power of high-quality recreation programs and safe parks that welcome everyone.
When did you join the Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) team?
I came to work for APR as a Labor Crew Coordinator in 2020 and was promoted to Program and Operations Manager for the Asset Management division about six months later. In this role, I manage a group of 45-75 individuals (depending on the season) who oversee maintenance and repairs, painting, mowing, landscaping, and trades work such as plumbing, electrical, and mechanical tasks. They help ensure exceptional experiences for park visitors and community members attending programs held in parks, pools, and community centers.
Most people may not know that over and above the parks and centers we take care of, we are also responsible for some City of Asheville properties that are not part of the APR system, such as parking lots and public plazas. Currently, we have five that we maintain on a regular basis.
What inspired you to apply to join the team?
Raised by parents who were very active with youth athletics programs in our community, I had an interest in field maintenance that led me to pursue a career in the turf industry. After working for many years with Black Mountain Recreation & Parks and its golf course, I went to work at a local country club. When I saw the APR job posting, I jumped at the opportunity to return to the field I am most passionate about.
Which accomplishments are you most proud of in terms of your work with the department?
I am proud of the team we have developed and all the improvements we have made to the parks and properties we manage.
For you personally, what does it mean to work for the department?
It means I get to come to work everyday and help make our parks safer and more enjoyable for everyone in our community.
How have you grown professionally by working with APR?
APR graciously allowed me to earn my Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) and Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certifications, as well as many other trainings that have made me better equipped to serve the community.
What do you do for fun when you’re not working?
When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family, playing golf with family and friends, and coaching youth sports.
