APR Innovators is an Asheville Parks & Recreation series highlighting team members going above and beyond to bring huge value to community members through knowledge, connections, and insight that come from a desire to create the best city possible through the power of high-quality recreation programs and safe parks that welcome everyone.

When did you join the Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) team?

The late Marshall Logan hired me in 1994 as an APR Afterschool day camp assistant at Ira B. Jones Elementary School. Since then, I’ve served as APR Afterschool Day Camp Coordinator, Recreation Specialist, Recreation Center Director, and Recreation Facility Supervisor.

In each role, I’ve acted as referee, social worker, judge, lawyer, teacher, psychologist, and voice of reason (“Cuz why would you want to do that?”)!

What inspired you to apply to join the team?

I was working part-time at a daycare center with preschoolers. Working with that age group was very interesting, so I applied for a job with APR. I also have a creative side that I needed to get in touch with.

Which accomplishments are you most proud of in terms of your work with the department?

I have a lot – they could take two pieces of paper! Some include:

  1. Watching programs that I created flourish.
  2. Seeing patrons come out and enjoy the programs that are offered.
  3. Meeting new people and listening to their stories.
  4. Crossing barriers and bridging gaps, leading by example.
  5. Trying whitewater rafting and liking it.

For you personally, what does it mean to work for the department?

Your direction is more important than your speed.

How have you grown professionally by working with APR?

By attending conferences, learning new and innovative ideas, and sharing them with fellow co-workers and the communities that we serve.

How would you complete this sentence: I work for Asheville Parks & Recreation because…

It’s the only job where you can play and get paid. I get paid to do what I love!
