City of Asheville to co-host Affordable Housing Summit

The City of Asheville, along with partners Pisgah Legal Services and Buncombe County, will host the 2017 Affordable Housing Summit on September 29 at UNC Asheville’s Sherrill Center.

The 2017 Affordable Housing Summit will bring together developers, investors, planners, local government officials, and policy experts in a day of discussions designed to encourage creative and replicable models of affordable development and bring new players to the field. Discussion will center on solution-oriented strategies.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the day’s program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The summit will begin with a keynote by Pulitzer Prize winning author Matthew Desmond, followed with morning and afternoon sessions in concurrent tracks on development/design, finance, policy, and emerging trends.

The summit addresses an issue of great importance to Asheville, said Community Development Director Heather Dillashaw,

“Like many communities across the nation, Asheville is experiencing a crisis in addressing the critical shortage of affordable housing,” Dillashaw said. “The City is grateful for the hard work of the community partners who have come together to sponsor this Affordable Housing Summit. It will be an event focused on both education and creative solutions so we can move forward with concrete steps to provide safe, permanent affordable housing for all residents of the Asheville-Buncombe community.”
