Asheville to host Memorial Day concert and ceremony

The City of Asheville Mayor’s Committee for Veterans Affairs will host the annual Memorial Day Concert and Ceremony on the Roger McGuire Green stage of Pack Square Park starting at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, May 25, 2015.

Concert

Featured will be the award winning North Carolina Army National Guard’s 440th Army Concert Band with musical performances before and after as well as during the ceremony. The Band’s Commander is Chief Warrant Officer/CW2 Linda R. Horton and the Band’s Conductor is First Sergeant William W. McDowell.
Asheville’s noted choral group, The Reuter Center Singers, will also perform at the ceremony. President of the Singers is Robert Dutnell and the group’s conductor is Chuck Taft.

Ceremony

The Presentation of Colors will be by the Asheville High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC. A Recognition of Service presentation to our Armed Forces and community first responders will be given by Buncombe County Commission Chairman, the Honorable David Gantt.
Commander Paul R. Pampuro, US Navy, Commanding Officer of the USS ASHEVILLE SSN 758 will give remarks and the principal speaker will be Asheville’s Mayor, the Honorable Esther Manheimer.
A commemoration wreath will be presented by Mayor Manheimer, Chairman Gantt, Commander Pampuro, members of the Armed Forces and Asheville and Buncombe County emergency responders in commemoration of those who have sacrificed their lives in service to this country and community.
Matt Mittan, owner of Independent Asheville Radio and Commentator of News Talk 50, 1350 WZGM will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
