Water Maintenance work will close the intersection at Craven Street /Haywood Street and Riverside Drive for water valve repair work from Aug. 11-13.
This is an important valve replacement project designed to maintain Asheville’s water system, to proactively replace components of the system to help ensure continuity of water service to our customers.
Road closure impact
This will be a hard road closure with no thru traffic at the intersection of Craven Street /Haywood Street and Riverside Drive from Sunday, Aug. 11, through Tuesday, Aug. 13. Residents can expect traffic detours around this intersection during this three-day period. People will be able to access businesses during this work, but access may be via a detour.
Water customer impact
The pipes in this intersection supply water to West Asheville from the River District to Deaverview Road.
On Aug. 12, there is the potential for low water pressure and water discoloration from midnight to 10 a.m. (estimated). A full loss of water to customers is not expected, unless unforeseen circumstances arise. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, a complete loss of water will be limited to the immediate construction area.
Businesses and residents in the affected area will receive notifications from AVL Alert. Asheville Water Resources will directly contact any businesses that may experience complete water shut-off.
Water Resources has nearby storage tanks that will be filled to capacity to ensure a continued water supply to West Asheville. These tanks can supply West Asheville with water for 24 hours.
The Water Department is closely coordinating with the River Arts District Transportation Improvement Project (RADTIP) for this work. Nearby RADTIP work will continue at the same time, though the projects are not directly related.
This valve replacement maintenance is part of a strategic approach to ensuring continuity of water service to our customers, identifying where the system needs to be maintained and doing the work before a break might occur. Another example is the North Fork Bridge Transmission Line Bypass Project, an installation of 1,700 feet of 36-inch transmission waterline with tie-ins to the existing 36-inch and 24-inch transmission lines begun earlier this year. This project is designed to better protect the Asheville Water System from a complete failure during a major flooding event.
