Asheville City Manager, Debra Campbell, is pleased to announce Dr. Tareq Al-Zabet as the City of Asheville’s next Public Works Director. Tareq will officially begin his duties with the City of Asheville on September 16.
Tareq is an accomplished executive with extensive leadership experience overseeing comprehensive infrastructure services. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences and an Executive Certificate in Public Administration Leadership.
Prior to joining the City of Asheville, Tareq served as the Chief Executive and General Manager of the Halifax Water Utility, where he oversaw an annual operational budget that exceeded $1 billion.
As the Public Works Director, Tareq will oversee a department that includes Stormwater, Streets, Sanitation, and Fleet.
