Asheville City government offices will be closed on Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29, 2024 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Here is a roundup of City service holiday schedules.
Points of Distribution and Community Care Stations
PODs distributing non potable water, bottled water, MRE’s and blankets as well as Community Care Stations offering additional services will be closed on Thursday and reopen on Friday.
ART bus service
ART bus service will be suspended on November 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving Day holiday. Thanksgiving is one of two holidays during which the City of Asheville’s ART system closes. Sanitation schedule
Trash and recycling collection will be suspended on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, and the Sanitation office will be closed. Customers with Thursday trash and recycling collection will be collected on Friday, November 29. Carts should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. Yard waste collection is still limited to leaves in paper bags or leaves/small sticks in containers labeled ‘yard waste’. Bags and containers will be collected Monday-Wednesday and Friday.

Storm debris collection will be suspended on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28. Limited storm debris operations will resume Friday-Sunday, and then return to full operation Monday, December 2.
Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR)
The vast majority of the City of Asheville’s parks are open following Hurricane Helene, though some have areas that are partially closed and others are completely closed. Open and partially open parks welcome the community daily from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. A full list of parks with their statuses is available at ashevillenc.gov/parks.
All APR community center buildings are closed on November 28 and November 29, but outdoor amenities on their campuses such as playgrounds, sports courts and fields, and picnic tables are open from 6 a.m.-10 p.m.
Multiple events take place on November 23 including the Holiday Jamboree presented by Bojangles in Pack Square Park from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Burton Street Community Center’s Friendsgiving Potluck from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center’s turkey giveaway and hot community meal from 1-6 p.m.
APR’s annual Holly Jolly Holidays series begins on December 4 with a Candy Cane Flashlight Hunt and continues through the month with cookie contests, seasonal games, festive meals, holiday camps, calls from Santa, roller skating at Harrah’s Cherokee Center Asheville, and more for all ages throughout the city.
Harrah’s Cherokee Center Asheville
The Harris Cherokee Center – Asheville will be open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 4pm on Thanksgiving week, but will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, and Friday, November 29.
Aston Park Tennis Center will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, and re-open with normal schedule on Friday. The last day of the 2024 tennis season will be Saturday, November 30. Opening day for the 2025 tennis season will be April 1.
The Asheville Municipal Golf Course will be closed on Thanksgiving Day but will reopen on a normal schedule on Friday, November 29 with play reserved to the back nine holes only.
The WNC Nature Center remains closed as it continues post Helene clean up and recovery.
Water Resources
Staff will be on 24-hour availability for water-related emergencies over the holiday. Customers can call the customer service line at 828-251-1122 to report water-related emergencies, leaks, breaks, or service interruptions.
Public Safety
All public safety services, including police, fire, and emergency response, will operate on a normal schedule – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
