The City of Asheville is taking a significant step forward in its infrastructure recovery efforts by initiating the first in a series of Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) for major rebuilding projects. This milestone marks the beginning of a strategic and coordinated approach to restoring and enhancing the city’s infrastructure following recent storm impacts.

The first storm recovery RFQ is for repairs to the Municipal Golf Course front 9 holes and will be posted today.

As the City secures funding for overall storm recovery, it’s important to begin rebuilding where possible. The Municipal Golf Course is a designated historic site operated through a public-private partnership and is a unique asset that will generally be restored to its pre-storm condition, with the exception of incorporating resiliency and mitigation measures.

The storm impact to the back 9 holes included more than 40 downed trees and damage to three bunkers. Downed tree removal is in progress and bunker restoration in the back 9 is complete. The course reopened as a 9-hole course on October 28, 2024 and will remain open throughout the restoration project. Moving forward with this RFQ is an important step to prevent the future loss of taxpayer dollars. The City currently bears the burden of net operational losses averaging $30,000 for each month that the 18-hole course is not fully open.

The Municipal Golf Course is just the first of many storm recovery projects. The sequencing of additional recovery projects is being carefully planned to ensure an efficient and effective rebuilding process.

Reflecting the City’s commitment to a coordinated and resilient rebuilding strategy, municipal land management will be a focus of this project. The RFQ process will allow the City to select a design team with the expertise needed to maximize eligibility for mitigation funding, ensuring that projects are not only restored but also fortified against potential future environmental challenges.
