Downtown Asheville’s 68 Haywood to host outdoor play during June

Appalachian-infused Shakespeare comes to 68 Haywood this month with “The Ballad of R & J,” a musical play brought to Asheville by the American Myth Center during the month of June.

As you may have guessed, it’s based on Shakespeare’s classic “Romeo and Juliet” star-crossed love story.

American Myth Center Director Aaron Snook sets the tale in Reconstruction-era Appalachia.

Performances will take place in the City-owned lot at 68 Haywood on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings during the month of June (with the exception of June 23). The official opening will be June 2 and closing will be June 30.

Music will begin at 6 p.m. with the show starting at 6:30 pm. All performances will be free to the public.

This event is part of the 68 Haywood Pop Up Program curated by the City of Asheville. The AMC has invited registered food trucks to join in an effort to create an environment that feels more like a festival than a show. Patrons will be allowed to come and go, grab a bite to eat or stay for the whole show if they please. Some seating available, but feel free to BYOS (bring your own seat).
