People gathered at the US Cellular Center on a rainy Monday evening Nov. 9 for the dedication of new Jan Davis Lobby.
In August, City Council approved a resolution to name the lobby after their fellow councilman in recognition of his three decades of service and leadership to the Asheville Civic Center.
Jan Davis was elected to the Asheville City Council in 2003 and served as vice-mayor from 2007-2009. He is serving his last term in office. During his time as councilman he served as liaison to the Civic Center Commission. As a member of the Asheville/Buncombe Sports Commission, Davis has been a proponent of the SoCon basketball and wrestling tournaments in Asheville. He has also served on the Tourism Development Authority.
The plaque announcing the Jan Davis Lobby reads:
“Welcome to the Jan Davis Lobby, named in honor of the former Asheville Vice Mayor, City Councilman and community leader, Jan Davis. Mr. Davis, an avid supporter of this facility for over 30 years, was instrumental in the multi-million dollar renovation of the facility in 2010-2014. Staying true to his belief that all great cities must have a great gathering space, Mr. Davis was a champion for this facility to begin a new life as an economic driver in the region through sports, entertainment and civic events.”
Earlier this year the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce gave Jan its Excellence in Public Service Award. Here is a video the chamber produced in recognition of the award.
