Overview
The purpose of this project is to replace a community-designed bus shelter in the Shiloh neighborhood near the intersection of Shiloh Road and Kent Street.

This project is currently in the design phase. Staff is working to engineer and estimate the cost of a bus shelter that is as close to the original design as feasible while also complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Background
In 2004, Shiloh community members worked with Design Corps Summer Studio and the City of Asheville to design and install a custom bus shelter near the intersection of Shiloh Road and Kent Street. The City removed the bus shelter in 2022 as part of a contract to remove several bus shelters due to factors related to age, condition and the need to ensure compliance with the ADA. In response to neighborhood concerns, the City agreed to replace the bus shelter in a manner as close to the original as possible.
The original Shiloh community bus shelter (pictured above) was featured in the 2008 book Expanding Architecture Design as Activism by Bryan Bell and Katie Wakeford.

- City of Asheville staff worked with the designers of the original bus shelter to gather information for the bus shelter replacement design

- Communication and coordination with Shiloh neighbors will occur as updates are available
- Late 2024 (anticipated): Construction begins on the replacement bus shelter, including community collaboration on a public art component at the shelter (more information to come)
