APR Innovators: Keith Whittington

Keith Whittington with people in Pritchard Park

APR Innovators is an Asheville Parks & Recreation series highlighting team members going above and beyond to bring huge value to community members through knowledge, connections, and insight that come from a desire to create the best city possible through the power of high-quality recreation programs and safe parks that welcome everyone.

When did you join the Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) team?

I entered the occupation in October of 1992. I’ve always been a Park Warden, although it has also been referenced as Park Liaison and Park Enforcement Officer.

What inspired you to apply to join the team?

After completing a stint in the US Navy as an Air Traffic Control Specialist and Aviation Warfare Specialist, I had aspirations of returning to work as a federal park ranger (a role I previously held at Great Smoky Mountains National Park) and was applying during the budget cutting years following Graham-Rudman-Hollings workforce reductions. Outlooks weren’t looking good as far as landing back in a position there, so I began to look more local.

Which accomplishments are you most proud of in terms of your work with the department?

Seeing the development of the riverfront parks and greenways are huge successes. It is rewarding watching many diverse populations come out and enjoy themselves with varying activities in the multitude of parks spread across city boundaries.

How have you grown professionally by working with APR?

I have learned to sharpen my public relations skills, as well as media and print communications.

What do you do for fun when you’re not working?

I like to read, monitor my weather station, astronomy, spend time at the lake, and do simple home repairs.

How would you complete this sentence: I work for Asheville Parks & Recreation because…

it provides the opportunity to work with the public – as well as various city departments – to expand upon and develop the socioeconomic community that is appealing for visitors and residents alike.
